Greenburgh Insider: Greenburgh recycling day report: What was dropped off on Saturday.

Residents took advantage of our recycling day. This is what was dropped off!

The Greenburgh Recycling Day on Saturday was a success with over 340 vehicles stopping by to drop off recyclables at our highway garage.  According to our Deputy Public Works Commissioner, Brian Simmons --

In total, the Greenburgh Recycling Day collected:

·         1 full sanitation truck of bulk items (e.g. furniture, tables, bed frames, etc.)

·         1 full 30-yard dumpster of metal items (e.g. bikes, appliances, chairs, etc.)

·         1/3 of a 30-yard dumpster of white metal items (e.g. refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, etc.)

·         6 containers of E-waste (e.g. computers, TVs, printers, etc.)

·         1 container of textiles (e.g. clothing, shoes, sheets, towels, etc.)

In addition, over 3 cubic yards of wood chips were distributed to residents for their personal use. I had stopped by twice during the event and those who took advantage of the day loved it.

Thank you to the Bureau of Sanitation, Bureau of Highway, Equipment Repair Bureau and DPW Admin. for your hard work to make this event successful.

Thank you to the Greenburgh Police Department, especially Sergeant Reckson and Joe Stevenson, for your help with traffic control.

We hope to organize another recycling day later this year and will keep you informed of the date and time.

Greenburgh Insider: 24 hour mobile crisis team to be located at Greenburgh Town Hall.

Watch interview with Councilwoman Ellen Hendrickx who talks about her brother who lost his life due to mental illness.

The Greenburgh Town Board approved an agreement with Westchester County -establishing a Mobile Crisis Team that will be located at Greenburgh Town Hall. The county will assume the costs of the team. the team will have the responsibility of providing  24-hour mobile behavioral health crisis support when responding to emergencies. The MCRT program was a recommendation of Project Alliance, a task force created by County Executive Latimer in 2021 to help re-imagine policing in Westchester. Law enforcement training to help police effectively deescalate situations involving people with behavioral health challenges was determined a top priority, and as a result the MCRT program was formed.

County Executive Latimer  said: “Every emergency, every 911 call, is different. When our police respond to an emergency and it is clear that someone is struggling with a mental health issue, we want them to be armed with the tools that they need to prevent a serious crisis before it occurs. The Mobile Crisis Response Teams are designed to provide 24-hour, seven-day a week support to every community in Westchester, to make sure that police, EMTs and dispatchers have the appropriate resources to help people. Whenever possible, a mental health crisis should receive a mental health response, and that is exactly what the MCRT program does.”

Greenburgh Councilwoman Ellen Hendrickx was recently interviewed on News12 (see link below). She talks about her brother who lost his life due to mental illness. Councilwoman Hendrickx worked hard encouraging the Town Board to approve the agreement with the county.  We are grateful to the county for their leadership trying to address mental health issues and will do whatever we can to help make this new program a big success. Lives will be saved!  And the potential for tragedies will be reduced.

THANK YOU WESTCHESTER!

Greenburgh Insider: Masks required tonight...150 living history interviews with veterans to air Memorial Day weekend.

Over 150 interviews with Veterans of World War II and the Korean conflict will air on public access TV Friday beginning at midnight till Tuesday morning. Interviews were conducted over a dozen years ago!

Because of the increase in Covid cases the Town Board will require residents who attend tonight's Town Board meeting to wear masks at the meeting which begins at 7 PM....

Interviews with 150 Greenburgh veterans (most of World War II and the Korean conflict) will air on Greenburgh public access TV non stop on Memorial Day weekend beginning Friday night at midnight until day until tuesday morning around  8 AM.

The living history interviews will play on channel 76 on Optimum and channel 35 on FIOS.  Each of the interviews is about half an hour and contain footage from the wars the Greenburgh heroes fought in. Some of the veterans who were interviewed have sadly passed. But, their contributions to our democracy will never be forgotten. It’s important that we give thanks to their bravery and patriotism.  And that todays students and tomorrows students appreciate the role Greenburgh residents played in preserving our democracy.   . The initiative was originally proposed by former residents Alan Hochberg and Steve Wittenberg. George Malone, the cable TV coordinator and Janelle Wallace who is the current cable TV coordinator assisted with the editing.

These living history tapes air every Memorial Day and Veterans Day and on weekends before or after the holiday and can also be streamed on the town website. The interviews were conducted over a dozen years ago.

Greenburgh Insider: New York State Assemblyman Tom Abinanti 92nd District: Greenburgh Health Fair.

Last week, Assemblymember Abinanti went to The Whole You Health Fair at a church on Juniper Hill.

Greenburgh Insider: DROP OFF UNOPENED, UNUSED FORMULAS AT LOBBY OF TOWN HALL.

Help babies get the formula they need by donating samples, unused formulas bring your formula to Town Hall. You can also pick up a formula your baby needs!

NEW DROP OFF LOCATION FOR  UNOPEN, UNUSED FORMULAS FOR BABIES AT GREENBURGH TOWN HALL, 177 HILLSIDE AVE, WHITE PLAINS.

Over a week ago a formula finder facebook page was created.  Westchester Formula Finders Buy/Trade/Sell/Give.  Over, 1300 families have signed up --helping parents obtain formulas for their babies.  Other residents have contacted me offering formulas for those in need. We have a wonderful community of residents who are more than willing to help each other.

Many of the formulas being donated are samples companies have sent to residents who don't need them. If you have unopened formulas that you would like to donate - you can drop them off at Greenburgh Town Hall, 177 Hillside Ave. I have placed a bin at the lobby of Town Hall. Residents who also need the formulas can stop by and pick up what they need.   The problem we are having--some families who got their formulas last week could be running out so we have to try to get replacements for them.

Alise Masterson, a former Greenburgh Covid Angel, organized the facebook page.  And Merav Gur of Ardsley has been very involved in matching donors with young parents. She set up an infant formula initiative in Ardsley.  Anne Richards has also helped residents who have asked for assistance in finding formulas for their babies.  I appreciate the hard work of dedicated volunteers. So far everyone who has asked my office for help in obtaining formulas for their baby has received the formula they need.

If you make a donation of formulas it would be helpful if you could e mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com. Let me know what you donated.  When I hear from residents who need the formula i can advise them if we have the formula they need. Since some formulas look alike but the containers have different colors, please advise of your needs or what you are donating.

We are also looking for vounteers who can search for formulas and possibly pick them up . Any formula we don't need will be donated to a food pantry.   The goal: to make the process of getting formulas as easy with as little stress as possible.

On Saturday (and during the week)  a group of dedicated volunteers fought the heat and created another pollinator garden at Hartsbrook nature center. A week earlier the team of volunteers planted a pollinator garden at AF Veteran park (near the food scrap recycling location).

Please enjoy the photos of the Hartsbrook Nature Preserve pollinator garden initiative and read the narrative. Pollinator gardens are great for the environment. We also have a pollinator garden at the Greenburgh Nature Center.

Thank you to our volunteer gardeners for educating us about the importance of pollinator gardens  and for your advocacy! You are inspirations.
