Greenburgh Insider: Bicycle Sundays tomorrow--celebrating our 50th year.

One of my proudest accomplishments was proposing to the county that they close the Bronx River Parkway for cyclists in 1974. Celebrating our 50th anniversary this year. I served on former County Executive Del Bello's Bikeway Task Force.

I got my start in public service by serving as the chair of the Task Force for Bikeways in Westchester in 1973 (when I was still in school). In 1974 I served as a member of former County Executive Al Del Bello's Bikeway Committee. I recommended that the county close the Bronx River Parkway for cyclists - an initiative the County Executive enthusiastically supported. It's been 50 years of fun on the parkway and I can't wait to get on my bicycle as I do every year and enjoy this fantastic program.

In 1973, when I was chair of the County Task Force for Bikeways, I was a big pain. I kept calling legislators at night and on weekends asking the county to fund the first bikeway in Westchester (Bronx River Parkway bike path). I wrote letters, spoke at meetings. Organized petitions.  Persuaded newspapers to write editorials. One day the Minority Leader of the Board of Legislators asked me to agree to a deal: the Board of Legislators would fund the bikeway if I agreed not to show up at Board of Legislators meetings for six months. I did!  And the bikeway was funded. We're continuing to make Greenburgh and Westchester a more bicycle/pedestrian friendly community. In recent years Greenburgh has overseen the funding and building of almost 12 miles of new sidewalks. More to come.

Greenburgh Insider: A new online news publication- RIvertownscurrent covering Greenburgh's river villages.

Independent news publications are important aspects of our democracy.

A few months ago Greenburgh lost two publications: The Scarsdale Inquirer and the Rivertowns Enterprise.  Some good news: Janine Annett has launched a new online publication called Rivertowns Current. I interviewed Janine on Solving Problems. She discusses her publication and extensive experience as a reporter.  If you would like to subscribe (free or paid) visit [https://rivertownscurrent.substack.com/](https://rivertownscurrent.substack.com/).   The link to the interview is below: [https://youtu.be/XTvr0PXUUVA](https://youtu.be/XTvr0PXUUVA)

This new source of local news already has recruited several experienced reporters for their publication. Their calendar of events is already very popular and they publish interesting stories. The Rivertowns Current has 575 subscribers (and growing), including 124 paid subscribers. They have a nice working relationship with the Hudson

Independent and have been cross-posting each other's stories. The events listings have been very robust, with many people submitting local events. They have covered things like new local businesses, the school budget, tax breaks for seniors and first responders, the local arts scene, local dining, local sports, sustainability issues, and more... with much more to come

A shoutout to Lucas Cioffi who led the effort to find a way to save local news publications and to encourage the start up of new local publications. Mr. Cioffi, along with Sandra Nam, QiqoChat Inc and the Westchester Youth Congress organized a very impressive community meeting in February attended by over 300 residents including Janine Annett. It is so important in a democracy to have independent news organizations.  The Rivertowns Current and other current and future local news outlets are good news for democracy and for our community.
