Greenburgh Insider: WE NEED volunteer landscape/snow angels.

Introducing two leaders of the 2022/23 Greenburgh Landscape Angels and Snow Angels programs.

INTRODUCING THE 2022-2023 SNOW ANGELS/LANDSCAPING ANGELS LEADERS.

Sign up to volunteer or if you are a senior in need of assistance.

LANDSCAPE ANGELS WILL HELP SENIORS WITH LANDSCAPING ON OCTOBER 23 AND NOVEMBER 19TH    (NEED VOLUNTEERS--WE ARE COMPILING LIST OF RESIDENTS WHO NEED HELP).

I’m happy to introduce our new volunteers – both exemplary high school students – to head up this year’s Landscaping Angels and Snow Angels programs to help seniors on a limited budget rake or shovel their lawns and driveways/sidewalks. They are looking for both teenage volunteers to assist their efforts in getting to as many seniors as possible, and for requests from seniors who need help.

In their own words, here’s Liam and Zach:

LANDSCAPING ANGELS

My name is Liam Mantini and I’ll be leading Greenburgh’s Landscaping Angels program this Fall. Landscaping Angels asks high schoolers around our area to help volunteer by assisting our senior citizens with their basic landscaping needs - primarily with raking leaves. In hopes to maximize the efficiency of this program, we plan on dedicating two days this Fall where we will go around responding to any requests for help. Those two dates this year are October 23rd and November 19th. I’ve been an active Snow Angel for the past three years, and to be able to head this new program is rewarding and exciting. To sign up as a volunteer or to request help, please visit the links below. You can email me at liam.mantini35@gmail.com.

SNOW ANGELS

My name is Zach Weinhouse and I’ll be leading Greenburgh’s Snow Angels program this winter. Snow Angels gathers high schoolers to volunteer and help shovel the driveways and walkways of homeowners who can’t do it themselves. I’ve been an active Snow Angel for the past three years, and feel prepared and excited to take on this leadership role. When I’m not shoveling driveways, you can find me playing football or tennis for Ardsley High School or studying for an upcoming test. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to zachary.weinhouse@gmail.com

—

Below you will find links to two simple Google Forms — one for volunteers to sign up, and another for citizens to request assistance. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to zachary.weinhouse@gmail.com or liam.mantini35@gmail.com with questions, comments, or suggestions! If you can’t get online and need assistance by phone, you can call: Program Coordinators Zach Weinhouse (snow) at 914-839-0301 and Liam Mantini (landscaping) at 914-200-8072.

For Seniors: help request form - https://forms.gle/SJJUfpQSzGPEwzHT9

Volunteer Sign-Up - https://forms.gle/gLGHq3RgRue57PRt8

Thank you, and to our new team leaders for coordinating this incredible service for our seniors!  The snow angel program is starting our 32nd year. And, the landscape angels program is now in our 2nd year. We are so fortunate to have some exceptional students living in our town.

Greeenburgh Insider: Public Hearing: Cannabis Wed at 7:30 PM...reminder first half of school taxes due September 30.

Town does not have any control over school taxes. School districts are independent of the town.

Reminder: First half of school taxes must be paid by Friday, September 30th (avoid penalties). The town of Greenburgh has no control over the school taxes. School districts are independent of the town. We only collect the taxes.

On Wednesday September 28th, the Town Board will hold a public hearing on a local law which would regulate various aspects of Cannabis, including retail dispensaries, indoor processing, indoor distribution facilities, etc. The public hearing begins after 7:30 PM at Greenburgh Town Hall.  Residents can participate by zoom if they do not want to attend the meeting in person.  The law would establish retail dispensaries as a special permit use in the PD Non-Residential Planned Development District. Other cannabis uses such as processing, distribution, and cultivation all would be restricted to be fully enclosed, and allowable by special permit in the PD District and LI Light Industrial and GI General Industrial Districts. A presentation of the law on Wednesday will include mapping that highlights these Zoning Districts and will include a comprehensive overview.  The sale would only be allowed in NON RESIDENTIAL neighborhoods.

Greenburgh Insider: TROUBLESOME BROOK IN EDGEMONT and MANHATTAN BROOK IN FAIRVIEW MAY CAUSE LESS TROUBLE NOW.

Town DPW makes significant flood mitigation efforts in various neighborhoods.

TROUBLESOME BROOK IN EDGEMONT and MANHATTAN BROOK IN FAIRVIEW AND OTHER WATERWAYS MAY CAUSE LESS TROUBLE NOW.

Town DPW makes significant flood mitigation efforts in various neighborhoods.

Town residents who have suffered decades of flooding issues with storm overflow from the Troublesome Brook in Edgemont, have already seen an improvement in conditions after this summer’s mitigation work.

“Without question,” agreed resident Robert Dilorenzo who praised the project that is nearly completed.

In the aftermath of Ida, the Department of Public Works received many urgent requests for flooding assistance, some of which persist through every substantial rainfall. The Edgemont area of Greenburgh has seen problems from the Troublesome Brook for over 60 years.

The Town Board approved in this year’s budget funding allocated to flood mitigation, which enabled the DPW to put several essential projects out to bid. Morano Brothers Inc. won the contract to widen the channel along Central Avenue most impacting the Greenville Fire Department, Curry Chevrolet, and about six residences along Winthrop and Clarendon Road.

The work increased the area of water storage and decreased it being prone to clogging.

Another problem area surrounds Manhattan Brook, especially behind the Theodore D. Young Community Center. Twice they’ve lost their gym floor and after Hurricane Ida the pool was shut down when it filled with muddy water. In recent weeks, Morano crews cleaned out obstructions and silting up of the culverts alongside 119 and the Crossroads Shopping Center. Here again, Town engineers have seen improvements with recent rainfall that would have flooded the area otherwise.

Finally, another area that received a clearing out is the tributary by the County Center that leads to the Bronx River. Six neighbors who live on Old Kensico Road have been most directly impacted.

In the spring, the Town filed a multi-million dollar FEMA grant in the hopes of getting a handful of houses in the Babbitt Court neighborhood of Elmsford who suffer from Saw Mill River overflow regularly lifted to a higher elevation. The grant awards won’t be announced until Spring 2023.

“The work we have been doing will substantially improve the quality of life for many residents.. Further work for the Troublesome area may come following an engineering study underway from Woodard & Curran environmental engineering consultant firm.

We have substantial areas around town with flooding problems. Resolving all the flooding problems in town will cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Our strategy is to include in upcoming annual budgets funds for flood control initiatives. We will also reach out to Westchester County, NYS and the federal government for grants and will gradually try to address problems in different neighborhoods of town.

Greenburgh Insider: Link to video-Andre Talley street dedication.

Global fashion icons and local friends, neighbors and officials came together to celebrate renaming a portion of Worthing Street "Honorary Andre Leon Talley Way".

LINK TO VIDEO OF ANDRE TALLEY WAY DEDICATION   September 21, 2022.

September 21, the last day summer, marked a special day in Greenburgh when global fashion icons and local friends, neighbors and officials came together celebrate the renaming of a portion of Worthington Street “Honorary André Leon Talley Way.”

André, larger than life Vogue creative director who lived in Greenburgh and died in early 2022, “gave us a picture of what life can be when we believe in ourselves,” said Deacon Frank Williams.

Azline Suber, owner of Azline Unique Fashion, worked hard to make this event happen and the reception to follow at the place where she met André, the City Limits Diner he loved. He said she looked "fabulous." Azline co-chaired the event with our Town Clerk, Judith Beville.

Fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg spoke of her dear friendship of over 45 years, sharing that this “was a very emotional day for all of us; I love André” and that “no matter how big he was, sometimes he felt small” but she was happy to report that before his death, “he felt big.”  "The idea that now the street will be named for him fills my heart," said Furstenberg in a WWD interview.

All the members of the Greenburgh Town Board- Ken Jones, Gina Jackson, Ellen Hendrickx, Francis Sheehan and myself had voted to dedicate the street in Andre Leon Talley's honor and memory

Greenburgh Insider: NYS repaving Saw Mill River Road beginning this week.

Thank you Jennifer Glen- a graduate of the Elmsford school district who collected 1,400+ online signatures. She made a difference.

The NYS Department of Transportation will start repaving 9A in Elmsford/Greenburgh from Babbitt Court to Fairview Park Drive  this week thanks to funding secured by State Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins. Credit also goes  to a lobbying effort organized by a graduate of the Elmsford public school system, Jennifer Glen, who is currently studying for her MCAT to apply to Medical School this coming year.

This summer Jennifer organized an online petition drive and collected over 1,400 signatures from motorists, pedestrians and citizens who were upset at the numerous potholes, craters and bumpy/unsafe road conditions.

The NYS department of Transportation had claimed they had no funds to repave the road just months ago. Jennifer highlighted the fact that one citizen can make a difference.  Watch the link to the CBS TV news story about Jennifer and her successful lobbying effort.

I hope that Jennifer's success will motivate others to get involved and to speak out on issues of concern. You can also be heard. And you can make a difference in our community.

Thank you, Jennifer Glen for being an inspiration. And, thank you Senator Cousins for securing the funds needed to repave this important road.
