Greenburgh Insider: Why is there an ugly tank and construction across from the Knollwood pump station?

The tank and construction activity is taking place because of a requirement by the NYCDEP.

WHY IS THERE A LARGE WATER  TANK OFF OF STADIUM ROAD (near acme and Knollwood Road)?

You might have noticed a large tank off of Stadium Road – and construction activity. I have been receiving complaints and questions about what’s happening so I wanted to write an explanation. Our water department did not have any options – this work to comply with a new requirement from the NYCDEP. Here’s a detailed explanation from our Deputy Commission of Public Works, Brian Simmons:

Town of Greenburgh Consolidated Water District No. 1 is currently supplied water from the City of New York, Department of Environmental Protection – Bureau of Water Supply (NYCDEP.). This water originates in protected watershed areas 120 miles northwest of Greenburgh in the Catskill Mountains and travels through a New York City owned aqueduct system. The water received from New York City's system is disinfected with chlorine and ultraviolet (UV) light. The Town was recently notified by the NYCDEP that it plans to cease continuous chlorination at the Kensico Reservoir. This requires that the Consolidated Water District No. 1 augment disinfection treatment utilizing a chlorine contact tank and chemical feed station to meet federal and state drinking water standards. This project is currently under construction with an anticipated completion date in Summer of 2023. The project involves the installation of a new cylindrical above ground tank, chemical feed station and necessary infrastructure to support it.

We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to provide safe and reliable drinking water to the residents of the Consolidated Water District. If you have any questions, please reach out to the Greenburgh consolidated Water Department at 914-989-1900. In the event of a water or sewer emergency, please contact the Town of Greenburgh Water Department at 914-989-1900.

After the construction is completed I have asked the Department of Public Works to try to reach out to the community to discuss ways to make both the tank and area around the construction look nicer. Will be happy to meet with residents who live near the tank to hear your thoughts. Feel free to e mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com.   In recent years the town has devoted lots of time and money trying to address water infrastructure issues. We have been repainting our water tanks, have connected the Knollwood pump station to Rumbrook so that there will be a backup. We want to make sure that you always can rely on on healthy water to drink!

Greenburgh Insider: Westchester County Legislator David Imamura 12th District: Bee-Line Bus-Stop Shelter Update.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Earlier this month, an accident on Route 9A in Ardsley caused major structural damage to a Bee-Line bus-stop shelter near one of the entrances to V.E. Macy Park. We know many of you were concerned about the damaged shelter posing a safety hazard to the community, and we are happy to share that our office worked closely with the County’s Department of Public Works and Transportation to have the shelter and bench removed. An assessment is underway to determine whether the shelter is able to be replaced. Please feel free to reach out to our office if you have any questions or concerns on this matter, and we will share any further updates as we have them. And thank you for being such patient and caring constituents.

Sincerely,
David Imamura

Greenburgh Insider: Thinking about snow in May? Town Bd honored snow angels leadership on Wed.

Thank you to the student leaders who organize our snow angels program for seniors and the disabled

It's a nice warm sunny day in Greenburgh. At the last Greenburgh town Board meeting members of the Town Board spent a few minutes thinking about SNOW!

We don't think it's going to snow this summer  (hopefully climate change won't surprise us) but we have to start thinking about snow. The Board honored our outgoing leader of the Greenburgh snow angels, Zachary Weinhouse of Ardsley who served as snow angel coordinator for the town during the winter of 2022/23. Zachary will be graduating Ardsley High School next month.  And, unlike  what is happening in the series SUCCESSION - Zachary has arranged for a non controversial transfer of leadership. The new snow angel leadership team consists of Noah Seifer, Alex Shapiro, Jon Guerrero and Joey Belarge.  We also recognized Liam Mantini who headed up our landscaping angels initiative.

Greenburgh Insider: Hartsdale/Fairview Memorial day info...living history interviews to air on TV.

150 interviews with veterans of World War II and Korean conflict to air on public access TV from Friday night (midnight) to Tuesday AM non stop.

Hartsdale parade Monday at 10 AM

Fairview ceremony at 11

150 living history interviews with Greenburgh veterans of World War II and the Korean conflict will air non stop on Greenburgh public access  TV stations 76 (optimum) or 35 (verizon) starting Friday at midnight and continuing till 8 AM on Tuesday morning. The living history interviews have been aired non stop on public access TV for over a decade. Because each interview is a half hour long it takes many hours to air the entire series of interviews.

The interviews were  produced by former Greenburgh resident Alan Hochberg and former resident and Vietnam veteran Steve Wittenberg.  In recent years Hugh McAuley and the Greenburgh veterans advisory committee has conducted additional interviews. Sadly, many of the veterans who were interviewed have passed away. These interview will enable future generations to never forget the role local residents have had in preserving our democracy.

These interviews have been shared with schools and the Greenburgh library. A link to each of the interviews can be found here:

Greenburgh Insider: Should Greenburgh organize an "Arts Market"? An interview with One River School of ArtOne.

the director of a local arts school in Hartsdale discusses the arts and doing business in Greenburgh.

THE ARTS - AN INTERVIEW WITH THE DIRECTOR OF ONE RIVER SCHOOL OF ART IN HARTSDALE

SHOULD GREENBURGH ORGANIZE AN ARTS MARKET?

Greenburgh has some great businesses -including schools that focus on the arts. I recently interviewed Megan Joseph, Director of One River School of Art which is located on 112 S  Central Ave in Hartsdale. Megan talks on the show about the arts classes, camps and programs River School of the Art offers the community. She also came up with an interesting idea: an art market ---similar to the farmers market but focusing on art work. Any thoughts?  The market could be held at a park or other convenient location.  If you are interested in helping organize an arts market please advise by e mailing me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com.

This website highlights the classes,  camps, summer scheduel for One River School: https://hartsdale.oneriverschool.com/

If you know of any business that deserves to be promoted please send me an e mail at pfeiner@greenburghny.com. I think it's important for local government to promote our amazing local businesses and to encourage residents to shop locally.

Greenburgh Insider: Ardsley eagle scout candidate organizes important bicycle rodeo highlighting safety tips.

We need to encourage cyclists to bike safely.

Anthony Kiriyanthan, an Ardsley High School student deserves the appreciation of our community for organizing a Bicycle Rodeo at the Ardsley Middle School on May 20th.  The rodeo highlighted the importance of bicycle safety. Anthony enlisted the help of  fellow students, the Ardsley and Greenburgh community police officers, Danny's Bicycle shop and others who provided participants with important safety recommendations that could help prevent accidents  and ensure an enjoyable bicycle experience.

Anthony  and his team of volunteers highlighted the importance of wearing helmet that protect heads in case  of a fall or collision. I have personally seen a number of cyclists injured over the years because they did not wear helmets.  One year I cycled from Hartsdale to Washington DC to raise funds for a Greenburgh resident who became a quadriplegic after a bicycle accident.

It's important that cyclists obey traffic signals, stop at stop signs, wear visible clothing (including reflectors) if riding when it starts getting dark. It's also important for cyclists  to watch for potential hazards, potholes, vehicles and not to cross the street without looking. It's also important that cyclists not pass on the right side, use a bell when near a pedestrian to warn them that there is a cyclist in back of them. And that cyclists shouldn't ride in the middle of the road. If riding with a friend ride in a straight line. Also be cautious at intersections which are common for accidents.

Cyclists should also be on the alert for dooring- when a parked car's door opens in the path of a cyclist.

Anthony indicated that he will be organizing other Bicycle Rodeo's.  Hundreds of cyclists die each year in tragic bicycle accidents. A suggestion I have: The Friends of Westchester County Parks, Westchester County and the NYS Thruway Authority should consider a bicycle safety initiative. On Bicycle Sundays signage could be placed along the Bronx River Parkway with different safety tips. The Thruway Authority should consider placing signs along the Mario Cuomo bridge bike and pedestrian lane with safety tips. BIcycle safety tip lawn signs could also be placed along the South County/North County trails and the Bronx River Parkway bike paths.

If we save one life the education campaign will be worth it.
