Greenburgh Insider: Another senior hall of famer: Dorothy Jeannette Jenkins.

Dorothy was the first Black Surgical Technician in the Operating Room at White Plains Hospital. An amazing woman.

Dorothy Jeannette Jenkins of Greenburgh (10603) is also being inducted into the Westchester County Senior Citizen Hall of Fame this year.  She will be honored along with Sarah Bracey White, Frank Williams, Constance Kehoe, Antoinette Lotito (posthumously), Lemuel Davis and Seymour Schreiber on Friday. Like the other honorees she is a real inspiration!  PAUL FEINER

Lovingly called "Jenny" by her co-workers, Dorothy Jeannette Jenkins was the first Black Surgical Technician in the Operating Room (OR) at White Plains Hospital Center. She was an invaluable member of the OR team, making sure the nurses and doctors had the instruments needed for the procedures being performed. Her uncanny work ethic and tough disposition, earned her a reputation as the "the one who gets it done." She was reliable and demanded respect for herself and all those on her team. Although she worked weekdays, Jenny became a true heroine to the nurses who worked weekends because she would come in on Saturdays and Sundays to assist them in preparing supplies for the numerous operations scheduled during the weekend shifts. She shared her knowledge and experience with newer nurses, becoming a mentor to many of them and helping them adjust to the demands of the OR. She stayed calm and helped keep order when the nurses felt inundated by the hectic OR schedule. Her demeanor was as appreciated as her expertise and she was a beloved member of the team even after she retired in 2002.

Jenny is one of six sisters born and raised in Westchester County. She started working at White Plains Hospital in 1959 at the age of 18 and continued working there for 43 years until she retired in 2002. Since retirement, she spends most of her time participating in the Senior Program at the Department of Community Resources (DCR) in Greenburgh, at church and with her family. As a member of the DCR/TDYCC Senior Program, she advocates for seniors by demanding greater access to recreational facilities for older adults. Her passion and persistence resulted in the implementation of a monthly Senior Swim Day and her excitement over the new program has motivated numerous other seniors to participate. She is a true innovator and vocal advocate for senior citizens in the local area.

Greenburgh Insider: Site walk-Taxter Road (proposed sidewalk) Monday at 10 AM beginning at site of new playground, parking area.

WALK ON MONDAY WITH RESIDENTS AT 10 AM TO REVIEW PROPOSAL FOR A SIDEWALK FROM OLD SCHOOL TO MOUNTAIN ROAD ON TAXTER ROAD.

AVALON WILL BE CONTRIBUTING  $120,000 TOWARDS SIDEWALK .

Greenburgh Town officials and civic leaders/residents will meet at the new playground/parking area on Taxter Road at 10 AM on Monday, November 28th to discuss a future sidewalk that will be built alongside  the new playground (new parking area next to the playground that the town constructed recently) and continue to Mountain Road.. We will walk the area from the school to Mountain Road --highlighting action steps that need to be taken to get the sidewalk built.  We want to show residents what obstructions have to be removed in order to build a sidewalk and answer questions residents may have.  The E Irvington Civic Association has advocated that a sidewalk be built on Taxter for many years.

At the Town Board meeting this past Monday the Board worked out an agreement wtih Avalon. They had previously been required to provide shuttle service to the train station for their tenants but very few people took advantage of the shuttle service.  It was costly to them. The Board, after consultation with the E Irvington Civic Association, agreed to allow Avalon to discontinue that service. In return - they will contribute $120,000 towards the proposed sidewalk on Taxter.   This sidewalk is important. A brand new playground was  placed at the Old School on Taxter Road very recently and the town (at the request of the civic association) created a parking area. A sidewalk will enable residents to walk safely to the playground with their children.

The site visit with residents is the first step the town takes before new  sidewalks are built. We recently awarded a contractor a contract  to build a new  sidewalk on N Washington Ave (a site visit took place a few years ago). That sidewalk construction should start in the coming months and be completed next year. And, last year the Town Board conducted a site visit walk with residents of Juniper Hill. We anticipate that construction of the Juniper Hill sidewalk will begin in 2023. A new sidewalk on Hillside Ave that will enable residents to walk from the Town Hall to South Road will be constructed next year. That sidewalk was originally scheduled for 2022 but Con Ed has advised us that they are going to be doing underground gas work in the coming months-- delaying that project till 2023. Additional new sidewalks will be built on W Hartsdale Ave and Dobbs Ferry Road. Funding was obtained for those sidewalks from NYS and the federal government. We will continue to work hard to make our town more pedestrian friendly and safe.

TAKE A LOOK AT PHOTOS OF 250 VOLUNTEERS (INCLUDING PRE-TEENS) PREPARING OVER 50,000 MEALS FOR THE HUNGRY THAT WILL BE SENT ALL OVER THE WORLD.

On Saturday morning   over 250 volunteers did something special at the Greenville Elementary School in Edgemont. They prepared over 50,000 meals for the hungry that will be sent  to people who are hungry all over the world.  It was inspiring to see small children working hard preparing the meals - along with their parents and  other adults from the community. Providing pre-teens with the chance to learn about hunger around the world and to bring smiles and help  food to the hungry  is fantastic.  A great way to start a life  --actually helping others. And doing something very important!

The Million Meal Project, a nonprofit organization, is launching this fall with a goal of packaging and distributing 1,000,000 meals to families in need all over the world by 2028. The organization will partner with global nonprofit Rise Against Hunger and other local organizations to host monthly meal packaging events in the Edgemont community over the next five years.. The Million Meal Project is run by the Blumberg Family of Edgemont, NY.

“Our family volunteered earlier in the year for a Rise Against Hunger event hosted by the Edgemont Community Council at Seely Place Elementary School and was inspired,” said Casey Blumberg, Wilson Blumberg, and Elyse Blumberg, co-founders of the Million Meal Project. “We had a lot of fun with friends at the event and were impressed with how easy it was to volunteer our time and make such a difference in so many lives.”

"The Million Meal Project's goal to package one million meals over the next five years will be incredibly impactful for the people Rise Against Hunger serves around the world. Our work to end hunger starts with a meal because, for those facing hunger, a meal can provide needed nutrition and support education, health and opportunities for bright futures," said Richard Kearney, Interim CEO of Rise Against Hunger.

There are a ton of pictures up on their  web site (https://www.millionmealproject.org/) specifically here - https://www.millionmealproject.org/events/november-19-2022.

Thank you to the Blumberg family and to all the volunteers for being inspirations and role models.

Greenburgh Insider: Some great Turkey Trot races around Ardsley, Irvington, Westchester this weekend.

Ardsley and Irvington are locations for 2 great local races this weekend.

If you love to run (or even walk) and if you missed the NYC marathon you are in luck. There are some great local races you and your family will enjoy this weekend.  Vikas Agrawal, an Ardsley School Board member advises that the Agrawal Foundation is sponsoring a 5k Race/Run Sunday November 20th at 11 AM at the Concord Road School in Ardsley. The foundation will donation the proceeds from the race to the High School Research program.  AgrawalFoundation5KRunWalk

Another great race on Sunday is the scenic 2.5 mile race in Irvington. Peter K. Oley organized the race in 1978 and it's been held every year since that time. The race starts  by the Dows Lane Elementary School looping up through the village and finishing just off the Aqueduct in Memorial Park. Some hills, some roads, some dirt and some grass and lots of fun. Peter was a longtime coach in Irvington and helped create the race which has now been named for him.

There are other races around the county on Thanksgiving and during the weekend. Have fun. Stay healthy and have a great holiday week.

Greenburgh Insider: Greenburgh dedicates Pollinator garden at Hartsbrook Nature Preserve.

Thank you to the many dedicated volunteers and our parks department for this important initiative.

Almost two years ago Mai Mai Margules (Tarrytown) and Carol Sommerfeld (Ardsley)  reached out to me suggesting that the town expand Greenburgh's pollinator pathway and plant new pollinator gardens in town. This summer the town, with the help of a number of dedicated volunteers  tand the Greenburgh Parks and Recreation department created two additional pollinator gardens - one at AF Veteran Park off of Heatherdell Road  and the other at Hartsbrook Nature Preserve in Hartsdale off of Ridge Road. The Greenburgh Nature Center also has a beautiful pollinator garden on their grounds. This is an article from Vassar.edu about the importance of pollinator gardens.

https://pages.vassar.edu/environmentalcooperative/2017/01/27/why-build-a-pollinator-garden/

On Sunday morning the volunteers who worked very hard in hot weather to create the pollinator gardens celebrated our commitment to pollinator gardens with a dedication of a sign highlighting the importance of pollinator gardens. These are photos that Commissioner Gerry Byrne of the Parks department took:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/ki9udBe2D4vUJLRd6

Three fourths of the worlds flowering plants and about 35% of the world's food crops depend on pollinators to reproduce. the pollinator garden is intended  to cover food shortage only this time for insects. The goal is to provide sufficient food (nectar and pollen) to reverse the decline of pollinators, bees in particular. Bees are essential for the reproduction of many flowering plants but also are responsible for  pollinating billions of dollars worth of agricultural crops.

When Mai Mai and Carol first discussed the importance of pollinator gardens many people had no idea of what a pollinator garden was. But, more and more people are planting native plants and pollinator gardens in their back yards. And people are also contacting their landscapers encouraging them to plant pollinators.. If you have a pollinator garden in your home - please e mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com. Send some photos that could be shared. Highlight your experiences.

Greenburgh Insider: Wanted- a Greenburgh Chamber of Commerce--looking for volunteers.

Greenburgh lacks a Chamber of Commerce that would serve unincorporated area businesses on Central Ave, E Hartsdale Ave, 119, Saw Mill River Road.

LET’S START A CHAMBER OF COMMERCE FOR GREENBURGH!

THERE IS NO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE FOR EAST HARTSDALE AVE, ROUTE 119, CENTRAL AVE, SAW MILL RIVER ROAD.

Town Supervisor Seeks Volunteers to Help Create Local Biz Network.

Greenburgh is a great place to live, work and shop - we boast a diverse community of neighborhoods, citizens and businesses - but we sorely lack a Chamber of Commerce to support these businesses.

Chambers of Commerce play an important role in the economic development of many communities like ours. Local Chambers exist in order to help businesses –and small business owners –  thrive all while connecting with customers/consumers. Among the resources they might offer are:

  • Networking opportunities
  • Marketing and sponsorship opportunities
  • Education and training resources
  • Access to funding sources
  • Bring awareness to local businesses
  • Increase commercial activity
  • Announce local events
  • Announce new business initiatives
  • Learn from each other
  • Access local and state governmental support and advocacy
  • and much, much more!

Greenburgh has never had a Chambe of Commerce serving the entire unincorporated section of town.r. There are strong Chambers serving the Rivertowns, Elmsford, White Plains, Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow but none for Greater Greenburgh. I envision one serving this umbrella of Greater Greenburgh with separate groups within that for our main business areas – Route 119, East. Hartsdale Ave, Central Ave, Saw Mill River Road.

If you are interested in helping start such an initiative, please let me know if you’d like to volunteer. My email is pfeiner@greenburghny.com and my number is 914.438.1343.

Greenburgh Insider: Watch video of bear roaming around Ardsley Road. Greenburgh (Near middle school).

VIDEO OF BEAR on Ardsley Road.

This is a video of a bear roaming around Ardsley Road - looking for food and a place to hide.   Bears have been seen around town in recent weeks so be careful.  This video was taken by a civic association leader.   The NYS DEC oversees wildlife in NYS and won't relocate bears that visit our area. It's becoming more common and they believe that the bears are not dangerous. Earlier this year bears were seen at Clarewood Condo, E Irvington, Dobbs Ferry, Yonkers.

My emails are saved and can become public knowledge as I am politely requesting some real action now.

Greenburgh Insider: Marinelli's Pharmacy in Elmsford encouraging residents to take vaccine and flu shot--a convenient and easy place to get your vaccine/flu shot.

This pharmacy was an enormous help to the Covid Angels during the height of the pandemic.

During the worst months of the Covid pandemic when vaccines were difficult to obtain, Marinelli's Village Pharmacy stepped up and provided enormous help to many seniors and residents of Greenburgh. They did more than most in trying to help those who desperately needed the vaccine successfully  obtain them.    Every time an elderly resident called me or the Covid Angels Committee  begging for a vaccine, we would call Marinelli's and most of the time -they figured out a way to help. Later, when vaccines were more plentiful and when people were scared to go inside buildings they offered residents outdoor vaccine shots.  People liked going there for their vaccines because most of the time there were no lines or short waits.

If you need a flu shot or vivalent covid vaccine  Marinelli's Village Pharmacy is ready to help again during the fall/winter of 2022/3. The location is  at 31 E Main Street, Elmsford (telephone 592-8211
Many people are not taking the flu shots and Covid booster shots. I think it's a mistake. We expect a difficult winter - expect more people to test positive. By taking the flu shot and booster you will be reducing the possibility of serious illness, hospitalization or death. We want you healthy!
