Greenburgh Insider: Maria Regina celebrates a groundbreaking for new athletic turf field.

We hope that the field will help Maria Regina attract, retain and develop the next generation of student athletes.

Maria Regina High School recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new athletic turf field. On hand to celebrate Maria Regina’s latest major project enhancement initiative were members of the administration, board of trustees, alumnae and current students.

Fr. Erik Lenhart, OFM, Cap blessed the field as part of the active role he has played in enriching the lives of Maria Regina’s students. He and Fr. Fred Nickle, OFM, Cap are two of the honorees at the school’s 65th anniversary celebration which will be held at the VIP Club in New Rochelle on October 27.

Weather permitting, when completed in Spring 2023, “this new state-of-the-art field will be a game changer that will help Maria Regina to attract, retain and develop the next generation of student-athletes to excel at the collegiate level and beyond,” said Anna E. Parra, President.

She added. “It is also the second exciting project we have announced recently as part of our strategic long-range plan to assure Maria Regina will continue to prepare young women for post-secondary success.” A few weeks ago, the school announced its plans and began transforming a classroom into a new ADA-compliant, state-of-the-art, Eco-Conscious Environmental and Life Sciences learning space.

Liz Pugsley, Athletic Director, said: “Our student athletes will have the advantage of experiencing outstanding play conditions similar to what they will find when they go to college, adding: “The new turf field will represent a significant improvement over the current field.”

To learn more about the renowned all-girls Catholic Maria Regina High School, visit www.mariaregina.org. Many residents of the town of Greenburgh are graduates of Maria Regina and many of their students live in town. We are proud to have this school as part of our community and wish students, faculty a great school year.

Greenburgh Insider: Greenburgh Neighborhood Health Center's CEO honored by Crain's NY as being among the best.

Pick up free masks, Covid-19 tests at Richard Presser Park tonight till l8 PM (stop by at the Greenburgh Health Center table).

Just left Richard Presser Park on Central Ave in Hartsdale.  The Greenburgh Health Center had a table at the FEG summer Parks event and was distributing free masks and COVID-19 test kits. They will be at the park till 8 PM tonight.  The Health center does so much good for our community. They have extended hours for Covid -19 testing, vaccinations and boosters (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 AM 5 PM and Wednesday from 9 am to  7 pm. They have a great staff at 295  Knollwood Road, White Plains (telephone:914-989-7600) that offer primary care , specialty care, dental care, nutritional counseling, immigration physicals, behavioral health and many more services. They have an on site testing laboratory, low cost drug prescriptions, HIV counseling and testing, patient advocacy program and participate in WIC. They work with the community and have placed a food pantry cupboard at the entrance of their facility --enabling lower income families to pick up free food that can keep them from staying hungry.  That's just for starters....

Last week I learned that Crain's New York Business named Judith Watson, the CEO of the Mt Vernon Health Center (which oversees the Greenburgh Health Center) as a Notable Health Care leader.

Greenburgh Insider: Statement of Town Board: Mural on Manhattan Ave.

An image of Louis Farrakhan on the mural was never approved by the town and will be removed.

Pursuant to the contract between the Town and the Artist, the mural design required approval by the Black Lives Matter Committee, its Manhattan Avenue Mural Subcommittee and the Town Board.  While the artist’s interpretation of artistic expression was welcomed, the addition of Louis Farrakhan and several other people was never approved by the Town.  The Black Lives Matter Manhattan Avenue Mural Subcommittee therefore voted to remove the unauthorized imagery.  The Artist has agreed that Louis Farrakhan will be taken off of the mural and the image will be removed this week. Added content continues to require Town approval.  We look forward to celebrating the completion of this mural, which is a celebration of black history.

The Greenburgh Town Board continues to support the Town’s Black Lives Matter initiatives and commits to continuing support through the Black Lives Matter (signage) Committee, the Greenburgh Against Systemic Racism Task Force, the Human Rights Committee and other endeavors."

The Greenburgh Town Board stands united against racism, antisemitism, sexism and anti LBGTQ.

The Greenburgh Town Board does not believe in the censorship of artistic expression, and acknowledges protest as a valid form of political expression.

Greenburgh Insider: INDOOR GOLF COMING TO CENTRAL AVE.

An exciting new business replacing a vacant storefront.

INDOOR GOLF ON CENTRAL AVE COMING SOON.

One of the most exciting new commercial initiatives on Central Ave:  Golfzon Social, a Golfzon America and Troon partnership. This proposal, which will be before the Planning Board in September would bring a golf simulator center to 691 Central Park Avenue, PO Scarsdale to replace a now vacant and former furniture store. The use will have 16 state of the art golf simulator spaces for indoor play where users can choose from 85+ golf courses   to practice or play in the most realistic conditions imaginable, including moving floor plate, auto tee and simulated rough and sand.  The space will also include a full bar and restaurant in a family friendly atmosphere. I am pleased that this type of year round recreation/entertainment space has chosen the Town of Greenburgh. More details on an official opening date will follow after the Planning Board application – building permit process concludes.

To learn more about the simulator technology that will be utilized in the store please visit  https://golfzongolf.com/   I know that many residents of Greenburgh and Westchester County will be very excited with this new business.  It's exactly the kind of new business we want in Greenburgh. Let's make Central Ave a fun and exciting place for shoppers and residents. This business will also attract people who normally would not drive on Central Ave--which should help other stores as well.

Greenburgh Insider: Sad news-- our new Town Engineer Vincent Masucci passed.

Very sad news. Recently (in June) the town hired Vincent  Masucci as our new town engineer. Today, we learned that Vince passed away. Vince was a hard worker, an extremely nice man, a dedicated public servant and someone who was very smart and caring. Last week I joined him making a house call to a resident who needed his help addressing a flood related problem. He was trying to come up with short term and long term solutions. He had great people skills. And, when I spoke with him he always tried being helpful.

He previously worked for the Village of Port Chester as Village Engineer. Had worked as a Project Specialist at FEMA and as a Contract Engineer at the New York Power Authority. Vince also had worked in the private sector and for other governments over the years.

We, in town  government, are heart broken with this sad news. He had a great  smile, an upbeat personality and was a terrific human being and a model for a public servant. He was excited to work for the town and we were excited to have him as part of our team. He will be missed.  Difficult to replace someone so outstanding.

Greenburgh Insider: Why is there construction activity near AF Veteran Town Park.

Ardsley is building a new highway garage.

Received some calls and e mails from residents who asked why there is construction activity right near  AF Veteran Town park on Heatherdell Road. I spent some time at the pool this afternoon chatting with residents. It was the topic of the afternoon when I was at the pool.

The Village of Ardsley is constructing a Highway garage next to AF Veteran Park. A few years ago they  purchased the property. They also prepared a question and answer pamphlet highlighting their reasons for building a garage at this site.  The project will include approximately 27,500 sq ft of enclosed space plus 2,500 sq ft salt storage shed.  Initial activity: setting up construction trailers, necessasry tree removal at jobsite, installation of site fencing.  Link below.
