Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: Pool opens Sunday at AF Veteran park--watch your small children in the pool.

Samantha Pfeffer, a student at Edgemont HS, lost her 2 1/2 year old sister when her sister drowned. Samantha formed a foundation to encourage parents/caregivers to be more careful.

The Greenburgh town pool at AF Veteran park opens tomorrow: Sunday May 26 and May 27th from 10 AM to 6 PM. The summer schedule is below.

Samantha Pfeffer is a student at Edgemont High. Her sister Saige lost her life when she was only 2.5 years old. Samantha was 8 years old in 2015. Despite a quick rush to action by family and the best efforts of medical professionals, who got her heart beating, Saige was pronounced dead two days later.

Samantha has devoted a good portion of her life chairing a foundation called the Water Guardians. The water Guardians and Samantha want to encourage parents and caregivers to be aware of the dangers at pools/beaches. Samantha appeared on a cable TV; you tube show Solving Problems. Link below:

Now that the summer pool season has started it is important for parents with small children to be careful. Drowning is a leading cause of accidental deaths in children, particularly those under the age of five. Drowning incidents are preventable through vigilance, education and proper safety. Drowning can occur in a matter of seconds and is often silent. A child can drown in the time it takes to answer a phone call or fetch a towel. That means constant, undistracted supervision is ESSENTIAL whenever children are near water.

Parents and caregivers might want to be trained in CPR and basic water rescue techniques. In an emergency knowing how to respond quickly and effectively can mean the difference between life and death. Talk to your children about water safety. Teach them to never enter the water without an adult and to always wear life jackets if they are not a  good swimmer.

Greenburgh Insider: NYS will not repave Knollwood Road in 2024--repaving delayed to 2025.

Disappointing news. Knollwood is in horrible shape. NYS needs to appropriate more funds to repave roads they own.

Update: Knollwood Road repaving delayed till 2025.

Last year I reported that Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins had secured funding from the state to repave Knollwood Road.  This state road, near Westchester Community College, was going to be repaved in 2024. Knollwood Road is  a state road, not a town road and the responsibility for repaving the road is the state’s.  The road is in horrible shape and is in desperate need of repaving. We’ve been pressing the state to repave this road for at least five years.

I was advised that that the state will not be able to complete the project this season. They expect to award a contract after bidding is completed by 10/28/2024. The end of this construction season will be used to prep the site including binder repairs, catch basin repairs, pothole repairs and gutter work to provide stability of Knollwood Road over the winter. The top course (final paving) will be constructed beginning in the spring, 2025.

Disappointed in the delays but pleased that NYS will repave this road—which probably has one of the worst road conditions of any road in Westchester.  Central Ave, another NYS road in bad shape, is expected to be repaved this year.    There are other roads in the town that are state owned and also in bad shape. NYS needs to allocate more funds to the NYS Department of Transportation to maintain roads that they own.

Greenburgh Insider: Bicycle Sundays tomorrow--celebrating our 50th year.

One of my proudest accomplishments was proposing to the county that they close the Bronx River Parkway for cyclists in 1974. Celebrating our 50th anniversary this year. I served on former County Executive Del Bello's Bikeway Task Force.

I got my start in public service by serving as the chair of the Task Force for Bikeways in Westchester in 1973 (when I was still in school). In 1974 I served as a member of former County Executive Al Del Bello's Bikeway Committee. I recommended that the county close the Bronx River Parkway for cyclists - an initiative the County Executive enthusiastically supported. It's been 50 years of fun on the parkway and I can't wait to get on my bicycle as I do every year and enjoy this fantastic program.

In 1973, when I was chair of the County Task Force for Bikeways, I was a big pain. I kept calling legislators at night and on weekends asking the county to fund the first bikeway in Westchester (Bronx River Parkway bike path). I wrote letters, spoke at meetings. Organized petitions.  Persuaded newspapers to write editorials. One day the Minority Leader of the Board of Legislators asked me to agree to a deal: the Board of Legislators would fund the bikeway if I agreed not to show up at Board of Legislators meetings for six months. I did!  And the bikeway was funded. We're continuing to make Greenburgh and Westchester a more bicycle/pedestrian friendly community. In recent years Greenburgh has overseen the funding and building of almost 12 miles of new sidewalks. More to come.

Greenburgh Insider: A new online news publication- RIvertownscurrent covering Greenburgh's river villages.

Independent news publications are important aspects of our democracy.

A few months ago Greenburgh lost two publications: The Scarsdale Inquirer and the Rivertowns Enterprise.  Some good news: Janine Annett has launched a new online publication called Rivertowns Current. I interviewed Janine on Solving Problems. She discusses her publication and extensive experience as a reporter.  If you would like to subscribe (free or paid) visit [https://rivertownscurrent.substack.com/](https://rivertownscurrent.substack.com/).   The link to the interview is below: [https://youtu.be/XTvr0PXUUVA](https://youtu.be/XTvr0PXUUVA)

This new source of local news already has recruited several experienced reporters for their publication. Their calendar of events is already very popular and they publish interesting stories. The Rivertowns Current has 575 subscribers (and growing), including 124 paid subscribers. They have a nice working relationship with the Hudson

Independent and have been cross-posting each other's stories. The events listings have been very robust, with many people submitting local events. They have covered things like new local businesses, the school budget, tax breaks for seniors and first responders, the local arts scene, local dining, local sports, sustainability issues, and more... with much more to come

A shoutout to Lucas Cioffi who led the effort to find a way to save local news publications and to encourage the start up of new local publications. Mr. Cioffi, along with Sandra Nam, QiqoChat Inc and the Westchester Youth Congress organized a very impressive community meeting in February attended by over 300 residents including Janine Annett. It is so important in a democracy to have independent news organizations.  The Rivertowns Current and other current and future local news outlets are good news for democracy and for our community.
