Greenburgh Insider: TRA provides free transportation to doctors for disabled/elderly.

A wonderful non profit that takes the elderly/disabled to medical appointments at no cost, using volunteers.

NEED A RIDE TO A DOCTOR, DENTIST, PHYSICAL THERAPIST?  CALL  A WONDERFUL NON PROFIT 764-3533.

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to attend an event at Ridge Park in Hartsdale sponsored by a wonderful organization that serves our senior and disabled population. The group is called TRA which stands for transportation, resources and access. Their e website is my-TRA.org. Their phone number is 764-3533.

TRA is made up of  a group of volunteers who drive seniors to medical appointments with a doctor, dentist, physical therapist, occupational therapist  speech and language pathologist and COVID vaccination sites.  They do not offer rides to message therapies or exercise classes unless conducted by licensed  medical professionals.  They want to make sure that seniors and those with disabilities are empowered to live independently at home.

The volunteer drivers are all screened. This organization checks references and conducts motor vehicle and criminal background screenings through a national firm that works with their insurance company.

To get a ride you need to sign a waiver and make the request at least 3 business days ahead.  The cost is FREE but they accept donations. The volunteers pay for their own gas and auto insurance.

Those who have walkers could fold the walker and take the walker into the car. One can also bring a caregiver with them.  TRA doesn't transport people in wheelchairs because the drivers use vehicles that don't accomodate a wheelchair.  THe county oversees a program called PARATRANSIT which uses small vans with wheelchair lifts.

TRA also encourages volunteers to help out.  If you would like to volunteer you should call them at 764-3533.  Our county is lucky to have a group of exceptional volunteers who care about our older and disabled neighbors.

THANK YOU
