Greenburgh Insider: Don't forget-save the date for our Juneteenth celebration.

Friday June 17 at 5 p.m. Greenburgh Town Hall. Followed by motorcade and celebration at Richard Presser Park.

During the past two years the Town of Greenburgh has sponsored  a Juneteenth motorcade. Please join us as we acknowledge, celebrate and honor the significance of Juneteenth.

The event will take place on Friday June 17. Flag raising at Greenburgh Town Hall at 5 PM. At 5:30 PM motorcade departs from Town Hall to Richard Presser Park, Webb Field on Central Ave.  At 6 PM a celebration.  Music by Jericko. Food, celebration, fun.  The celebration was proposed by Councilwoman Gina Jackson and is lots of fun and also very inspiring. Councilmembers Ken Jones, Francis Sheehan, Ellen Hendrickx and former Councilwoman Diana Juettner have supported this important event.

Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation  of enslaved African Americans. Celebrate African American culture on that day.. It was originally organized in Galveston Texas and is celebrated around the nation. The first holiday was celebrated in 1865 and the federal government declared Juneteenth a holiday on June 17, 2021 when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.

On Jun 19, 1865 General Order No 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger proclaimed freedom for enslaved people in Texas which was the last state of the confederacy with institutional slavery.
