On January 31st Mark Soja appeared at the Town Board work session to discuss his desire to build 62 additional units of affordable senior citizen housing at the former WESTHELP complex on the grounds of Westchester Community College in the town of Greenburgh. Two years ago Mr. Soja oversaw the completion of 74 units of affordable senior citizen housing at this site. The complex is called Mayfair Apartments. Mr. Soja indicated that if he is successful in obtaining approvals he will convert the administrative building to 14 units of housing for seniors and will construct new housing units on vacant space within the grounds. Mr. Soja also indicated that he currently has 275 seniors on the waiting list for affordable housing. Two years ago 575 applications for 74 units were received by his office.
The land is owned by the county of Westchester but is located within the boundaries of Greenburgh. The Town will oversee the SEQR full environmental review. No children will be sent to the Valhalla school district if the approvals are granted. Promises made to the school district by Mr. Soja relating to the 74 units of affordable senior housing a few years back have been kept. My office receives almost daily requests from seniors who hope to move into affordable housing. But---there is a significant affordable housing shortage in Westchester. Mr. Soja indicated that it will take his office a few months to file plans for the affordable housing.
I will also be reaching out to residents of Mayfair/Knollwood and will advise them of the proposal---an initiative take whenever development proposals are made.
