Recently, we conducted a survey of Greenburgh residents and found out (from 572 respondents so far) that 44% separate their food waste out already and most (41%) use the public bins to dispose of them, with many others composting at home or using their in-sink disposal. The majority of respondents (54%) are willing to go down to one regular garbage pick up a week in order to get food scraps picked up on the second day. 53% say they would use more public disposal bins if made available. Currently, we have food scrap recycling drop off locations at Greenburgh Town Hall and at AF Veteran park.
Next steps: The Commissioner of Public Works suggested a test curbside pickup of food scrap initiative for a limited number of people before we expand the service to the entire town. Hopefully, this can be done later this year or early next year. If it is successful we can expand the service. In the coming months we will be working with student interns - trying to increase community participation in recycling.
