We need to make all neighborhoods more pedestrian safe!  There have been many pedestrian accidents all over the region in recent years. Death, serious injuries can be reduced if we all work hard to find ways to make our streets safer. 

As a result, the  town has been building sidewalks all over unincorporated Greenburgh. Enhancing crosswalks.  This week we're adding a crossing guard on Edgemont Road/Braclay Road.  We're taking steps to build new sidewalks on Juniper Hill Road (near the Lee Jackson School). Design this year Construction next! We received a grant to build a sidewalk on Hillside Ave (hopefully that sidewalk construction could start later this year).  We expect to build new a new sidewalk on N Washington Ave this year and continue to press for a sidewalk on West Hartsdale Ave from Central Ave to Sacred Heart/Solomon Schecter/Woodlands  HS.  Last week residents asked for a new sidewalk on Mt Joy and Robin Hill Road and others asked for a new sidewalk on Taxter Road. A new sidewalk should be built on Dobbs Ferry Road between Knollwood and Tarrytown Road in the next few years.  And, the Town Board appropriated funds to make a crosswalk near Sacred  Heart School safer with a Hawk Eye.  Sgt.  Nick Reckson, our hard working traffic safety officer, is always looking for ways to make our community safer for all.  Every year we do a little more to make our streets safer. And, we will continue to give this attention annually.

We are not alone. Residents, civic leaders and elected officials all over Westchester are doing the same. One of the most active civic groups is in Dobbs Ferry.

A few years ago (pre pandemic) I met Lauren DeVilbiss, a mom who is very inspirational. She encouraged some grade school students to organize a rally in Dobbs Ferry for safer streets. Last year her organization organized a walk for elected officials and community leaders on streets near Springhurst School.  I recently invited Lauren and Liz Mendez to appear on my WVOX radio show to highlight what her group is doing to make her neighborhood safer. She is working cooperatively with elected officials at the village, county, state and school levels!  The link to the interview is below.  Involving the community in the process is fantastic!

Let's encourage all moms, dads, children of any age  to advocate for safer streets.  If every year a little more is done - we can make all our neighborhoods much more pedestrian friendly and safe.
