Greenburgh Insider: Some fine tuning to take place: Mt Joy/Robin Hill Road (one way test)--one way signs installed today.

 

The Greenburgh Town Board and police department, working with the Edgemont School district and civic leaders, want to make it safer for children to walk to the Seely Place School!

Earlier today the town implemented some traffic safety recommendations made by the Greenburgh Police department concerning Mt Joy and Robin Hill Road. These streets are  now one way for a test period --May and June. The goal --to make it safer for children to walk to the Seely Place School and the Edgemont High School.  The police department has been working with the Edgemont School district and civic leaders in recent months to discuss ways to make the streets safer for our children. 

 

Although the one way street signs are up today - there is still fine tuning that needs to take place. We will be painting over lines and expect after the initial learning curve is over and drivers become more familiar with the new pattern it will be much safer. We expect to put some staff out there tomorrow to help and plan to update online mapping services.  

 

I spoke with Rich Fon, Commissioner of Public Works and Sgt Nick Reckson this afternoon. Another idea--to do what other communities have been doing with some success and paint a designated section of Mount Joy and Robin Hill Road --with a pedestrian and bicycle logo---creating a special lane on the road . These symbols will highlight to motorists that children, pedestrians, cyclists may be using the designated part of the roadway.  Our goal: sidewalks! Painting a designated area will enable us to test the impact a narrower road will have before a sidewalk is constructed.  And while we are designing a sidewalk it will provide more immediate safety improvements.
