Greenburgh Insider: Congrat's Mary Jane Shimsky...Ukrainian community to open child care center off Jackson Ave.

Day Care Center to operate at former First Unitarian Society off Jackson Ave.

Congratulations to County Legislator Mary Jane Shimsky on winning the Democratic Primary for State Assembly. We look forward to working with you to make Greenburgh even better!   And, thank you to Assemblyman Tom Abinanti for your hard work and dedicated & effective  service to the Greenburgh community.

Greenburgh Town Board approves permit authorizing a new Child Care Center run by the Ukrainian Community at the  former First Unitarian Society off Jackson Ave

Another action step to help the Ukrainian community!  Greenburgh has the 2nd largest Ukrainian population in Westchester

Last night the Greenburgh Town Board approved a special permit that will enable the Ukrainian community to have a Child Care Center (Steppe Education) at 25 Old Jackson Ave. The building where the child care center will open was previously owned by the First Unitarian Society of Westchester.  Steppe Education will convert the building (which had been used as a religious institution and accessory child day care use) to a child day care center.  According to Peter Duda, representing Steppe Education, one of the goals of the child care center is to "help our citizens and more recent immigrants/refugees raise their children to be good people and decent citizens."

In recent months the Town Board and I have tried to show support for the Ukrainian community. Ukrainian flags have been placed at Town Hall and on E Hartsdale Ave. I have assisted some families with immigration issues and also provided some leaders of the Ukraine community with names of residents who have offered refugees temporary housing.   We are so pleased that this day care center will open to serve the Ukrainian community and hope we can do more to provide help to residents of Greenburgh who have family members in Ukraine or who are refugees.
