Greenburgh Insider: Why is there an ugly tank and construction across from the Knollwood pump station?

The tank and construction activity is taking place because of a requirement by the NYCDEP.

WHY IS THERE A LARGE WATER  TANK OFF OF STADIUM ROAD (near acme and Knollwood Road)?

You might have noticed a large tank off of Stadium Road – and construction activity. I have been receiving complaints and questions about what’s happening so I wanted to write an explanation. Our water department did not have any options – this work to comply with a new requirement from the NYCDEP. Here’s a detailed explanation from our Deputy Commission of Public Works, Brian Simmons:

Town of Greenburgh Consolidated Water District No. 1 is currently supplied water from the City of New York, Department of Environmental Protection – Bureau of Water Supply (NYCDEP.). This water originates in protected watershed areas 120 miles northwest of Greenburgh in the Catskill Mountains and travels through a New York City owned aqueduct system. The water received from New York City's system is disinfected with chlorine and ultraviolet (UV) light. The Town was recently notified by the NYCDEP that it plans to cease continuous chlorination at the Kensico Reservoir. This requires that the Consolidated Water District No. 1 augment disinfection treatment utilizing a chlorine contact tank and chemical feed station to meet federal and state drinking water standards. This project is currently under construction with an anticipated completion date in Summer of 2023. The project involves the installation of a new cylindrical above ground tank, chemical feed station and necessary infrastructure to support it.

We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to provide safe and reliable drinking water to the residents of the Consolidated Water District. If you have any questions, please reach out to the Greenburgh consolidated Water Department at 914-989-1900. In the event of a water or sewer emergency, please contact the Town of Greenburgh Water Department at 914-989-1900.

After the construction is completed I have asked the Department of Public Works to try to reach out to the community to discuss ways to make both the tank and area around the construction look nicer. Will be happy to meet with residents who live near the tank to hear your thoughts. Feel free to e mail me at pfeiner@greenburghny.com.   In recent years the town has devoted lots of time and money trying to address water infrastructure issues. We have been repainting our water tanks, have connected the Knollwood pump station to Rumbrook so that there will be a backup. We want to make sure that you always can rely on on healthy water to drink!
