Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: Edgemont Incorporation Hearing Notice.

Pursuant to the New York State Village Law, a hearing will be held on Friday, August 30, 2024 at 2 pm at Town Hall (177 Hillside Ave) regarding  a petition for incorporation of the proposed village of Edgemont.   Subsequent to the petition being filed, a notice of this hearing was posted and published pursuant to the Village Law, and an adjourned hearing date of September 18th at 7:30pm has also been noticed.

The purpose of the hearings is, according to the Village Law, to “hear objections which may be presented as to the legal sufficiency of the petition for incorporation.”  No testimony is necessary or permitted in support of the petition’s sufficiency – the petition speaks for itself. Only objections will be heard at this hearing.

If there are any objections to the petition, the Village Law requires that any and all objections “must be in writing and signed by one or more residents qualified to vote for town offices a town in which all or part of such territory of the proposed village is located.”  That means qualified voters in the Town of Greenburgh may voice their objections to the petition.

It is preferable for objections to be in writing, but if someone is asserting an objection verbally, then, the Village Law requires that their ‘[t]estimony as to objections may be taken at the hearing which shall be reduced to writing and subscribed by those testifying.”   In this regard, a transcript of the proceedings will be made.

Neither Supervisor Feiner nor anyone present may comment upon any of the objections

made.  A record will be made and after the hearing today and the adjourned meeting on September 18th, Supervisor Feiner will review the petition and the objections and issue a decision as to the legal sufficiency of the petition as is required under the Village Law.

Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: Enjoy Norman Gaines exhibit at the Greenburgh Library and watch interview with Norman.

Norman is a collector of ray guns and appreciates science fiction.

Greenburgh resident Norman Gaines has an interest exhibit at the Greenburgh Library. Norman is a collector of Ray Guns and  Miriam Bernabei interviews Norman on the you tube link below. The exhibit Norman shares with the community –featuring some of his collections is very interesting.

Norman saw his first science-fiction movie when he was 5, back in 1953. Almost all of them dealt in some way with ray guns. These were always highly stylized instruments with almost impossible capabilities. At the same time he was seeing these movies, a whole host of similar-appearing raygun toys were becoming available at what we called five-and-dime stores. Every kid wanted one. Not every kid could afford one. But as time went on, the raygun held on as a popular item, and Norman found himself acquiring a few here and there. He was even able to buy "signature" items, i.e. rayguns that were inspired by TV   shows and movies.  Norman shares some of his collections with Greenburgh library patrons.

Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: Maya Barmecha first started pushing for sidewalk on Ft Hill Rd when in 6th grade--progress happening.

Maya Barmecha is now entering 11th grade. Progress being made on her initiative to get a sidewalk built on Ft Hill Road.

Recently, the Greenburgh Town Board appropriated $600,000 in the 2024 capital budget to install new sidewalks in the town, including one on Ft Hill Road between Longview Drive and Underhill Road. This sidewalk was originally pushed for by a 6th grader in 2019 who urged the Town Board to support the construction of the sidewalk. Maya Barmecha can be seen in this November, 2019 News12 story asking the Town Board to give pedestrian safety priority.

https://westchester.news12.com/6th-grader-in-edgemont-lobbies-for-sidewalk-on-road-to-school-41332166

https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/edgemont-elementary-school-student-sidewalk-fight/

Maya is now a rising 11th grader in Edgemont High School. She never stopped advocating for this sidewalk and for other safety improvements in the town. And – if the sidewalk is constructed she will deserve much of the credit. She attended Town Board meetings advocating for the sidewalk, helped support a community walk on Ft Hill Road so residents could see first hand how important the sidewalk is for a community that does not bus children to school.  And dealt with NYC and regional media over the years promoting the sidewalk.

Maya’s positive experience in the town has given her a positive taste about government. She understands that government takes time -and there are always bumps in the road to successes but she is persistent and determined to make a difference.  Maya was selected to attend the Students Inside Albany Program. She was sponsored by the New York State League of Women Voters (LWV) Education Foundation and LWV of Scarsdale, where she joined 59 other students for a four-day conference in Albany. She said she had the pleasure and honor of shadowing Assemblywoman Amy Paulin and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins during both Assembly and Senate sessions. Maya wishes to share her incredible experience with her community. I predict that she could one day become a prominent national elected official.

Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: Fuller Center offers sandbags & volunteers donate time helping Greenburgh seniors and residents.

The Fuller Center, a non profit, has helped many residents who have had problems with flooding and so much more.

THE FULLER CENTER- HELPING REBUILD HOMES DESTROYED AFTER A HURRICANE, DISTRIBUTING SAND BAGS, DOING YARD WORK, EVEN HELPING AN ELDERLY WOMAN CHANGE A LIGHT IN HER APARTMENT.

In recent months I have been in constant contact with Jim Killoran of the Fuller Center every time residents call me with problems that need special attention. And- so far- I haven’t been disappointed!

HELPING TO REBUILD A HOUSE IN FAIRVIEW DESTROYED BY A HURRICANE.

After Hurricane Ida destroyed a home on Florence Ave in Fairview I reached out to the Fuller Center and they have enlisted groups of volunteers  rebuilding the home. When I stopped by at the house a few weeks ago I chatted with volunteers from Goldman Sachs who were helping. The house is about 50% completed.

DELIVERING SANDBAGS TO THOSE WHO LIVE IN AREAS THAT GET FLOODED.

During previous storms the Fuller Center delivered over 200 sandbags to families to help reduce flooding possibilities.  They are ready to help give sandbags to anyone in Greenburgh who gets flooded. They are asking for a voluntary  donation of at least 5 dollars per bag. If you can’t afford the donation they will distribute the bags anyway. text 914 406 3357 or email DART@fullercentenry.org (Disasster Assistance response team) donations online can be made at http://www.fullercenterny.org

HELPING WITH YARD WORK TO MAKE HOMES PRESENTABLE.

The Fuller Center helped a resident put in a pump in their yard and they assisted neighbors on Florence with yardwork and replanting. The centers volunteers also assisted a senior citizen on South Road with painting and landscaping and sent volunteers to a home on Dobbs Ferry Road make their lawn presentable. That was done at the request of our inspector who received complaints from neighbors.  They also helped a veteran, retired with landscaping on Hillcrest Road. A few weeks ago an elderly woman who is disabled called me – she needed help replacing a light in her apartment. I called Jim and the work got done.

This organization is amazing. They have made life less stressful for Greenburgh residents. And have brought smiles and tears of joy to many people who appreciate the fact that there are people in the world who care about others.

If someone wants to help a neighbor in need, volunteer, contribute e mail: volunteer@fullercenterny.org

The first Chick-fil-A® restaurant in Greenburgh will begin serving the community on Wednesday, Aug. 7.  We welcome this new restaurant to our town and know that this addition will attract more visitors, shoppers to the popular shopping center and to our town.

Located in the Midway Shopping Center at 913B Central Park Ave., Chick-fil-A Scarsdale will be open for dine-in, carry-out, catering and delivery from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

To date, more than 25 million meals have been created from Chick-fil-A Shared Table donations from over 2,000 Chick-fil-A restaurants throughout the U.S. and Canada.

In addition, Chick-fil-A Scarsdale is recognizing 100 local heroes making an impact in the Greenburgh area by providing them with free Chick-fil-A entrées for a year.  In recent months the owners of Midway Shopping Center have reconfigured parking spaces to facilitate safer vehicular and pedestrian flow.
