Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: Free party, free food, free entertainment - National Night Out Tuesday August 6.

One of the most enjoyable events of each year--and an opportunity to interact with the police and town officials.

FREE PARTY- FREE FOOD- FREE ENTERTAINMENT- GREENBURGH POLICE NATIONAL NIGHT OUT ON TUESDAY AUGUST 6  @ 6 P.M. TO 9 P.M.

During the past decade the Greenburgh Police department has sponsored one of the best free parties of the year – the National Night Out event. There is always free food, free entertainment, free fun activities for children and an opportunity to learn about the work our police department does.  Hundreds of residents have an incredible time

The Town of Greenburgh Police Department is proud to announce the hosting of this year’s Town Of Greenburgh National Night Out 2024 on Tuesday, August 6th, starting at 6:00 pm and ending at 9:00 pm. We encourage you to come out to our Greenburgh Town Hall, 177 Hillside Avenue, White Plains, NY and join your neighbors in participating in this community partnership about crime and drug prevention event.

National Night Out involves over 15,325 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all over 37.1 million people are expected to participate in this year’s National Night Out.

National Night Out is designed to:

– Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships;

– Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;

– Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; and

– Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

During the event, residents in neighborhoods throughout the Town of Greenburgh and across the nation are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening outside with your neighbors, police officers, firefighters and paramedics.

National Night Out is a great crime prevention tool that encourages you and your neighbors to get together. When neighbors know each other and pay attention to their surroundings, they are more likely to recognize and report suspicious people or vehicles to law enforcement. The more you know about your neighborhood, the more you can do to keep it safe.

Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: Greenburgh Town Bd approves lighting at W Rumbrook Park -enabling more Little League games.

The Elmsford LIttle League has over 700 members. We anticipate that lighting will enable the League to schedule 4-5 more games per week.

LIGHTS AT WEST RUMBROOK PARK APPROVED BY TOWN BOARD IN 2024 CAPITAL BUDGET—will enable Little League to have 4 to 5 more games per week.

The Elmsford Little League is a very popular League – with over 700 participants a year. Little League members come from much of unincorporated Greenburgh- Edgemont, N Elmsford,Fairview, E Irvington. The League had requested the town to include $250,000 in the 2024 capital budget for lights to allow for more games to be played. I included the request in the 2024 proposed capital budget which was unanimously approved by the Town Board earlier this month. Lights will allow the Little League to have 4 to 5 more games per week at West Rumbrook Park. The lack of lights hurt the Little League during the spring months when it gets dark early. Increased rain events have forced cancellations.

Before the lighting was approved the leadership of the Little League knocked on doors – speaking to residents of Babbitt Court soliciting their support for the initiative.  New technology for lighting of fields are designed to control obtrusive lighting.   More and more communities are purchasing ball field lighting that supplies the illumination needed for safe play without disturbing nearby residents.

I will be asking the Town Board and town staff to start the process of planning for the construction of a sidewalk between Babbitt Court to the Little League Field and from Parkway Place to West Rumbrook Park. We need to make it safer for children and their parents to walk to the field.

Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: Free- closing performance Rivertowns Playhouse tonight-Summer Shakespeare Festival.

A very impressive production that your family will not want to miss--tonight! One of the best locally produced theater companies serving our region.

Closing show tonight – Rivertowns Playhouse 2024 Summer Shakespeare  Festival

One of the best locally produced theater in the region is having the closing show tonight at 8 PM at the Rivertowns Playhouse in Irvington.  The Irvington Playhouse is located at the Irvington Presbyterian Church. Kamran Saliani is the artistic director and resident actor.  The Irvington Shakespeare Company has – in the past been nominated for several Broadway World Regional Awards  and has been recognized  as the Best of Westchester distinctions.  The cost is free with an option to donate.

Acting Shakespeare Inside America’s Wilderness is an innovative and compelling 90-minute performance that artfully blends stand-up comedy, music, and drama into an extravagant night of theater. This half-length, full-person play creatively adapts Ian McKellen's "Acting Shakespeare," drawing inspiration from James Shapiro's "Shakespeare in a Divided America," and is intricately woven with the parody style reminiscent of Bo Burnham's "Inside" and "Make Happy."

Set against the tumultuous backdrop of early American history, the play delves into the profound impact of William Shakespeare's works, as interpreted by two iconic figures: Abraham Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth. Their divergent understandings of Shakespeare's texts lead them on a collision course to one of the most pivotal moments in history – Lincoln's assassination.

Lincoln, a figure of unity and hope, sought guidance in the wisdom of Shakespeare during his presidency, while Booth, an actor consumed by Confederate ideologies, drew dark inspiration from the same plays. This contrast sets the stage for a gripping exploration of how literature can influence the course of events and the minds of those who shape history.

The play's unique narrative is further enriched by an eclectic mix of songs from Stephen Sondheim and Molly Lewis, adding a musical depth that echoes the emotional and thematic complexity of the story. Through a dynamic blend of drama, humor, and music, "Acting Shakespeare Inside  America’s Wilderness" not only recounts historical events but also offers a reflective commentary on the power of interpretation and the indelible impact of art on society and individual destiny.

Acting Shakespeare Inside America’s Wilderness is an innovative and compelling 90-minute performance that artfully blends stand-up comedy, music, and drama into an extravagant night of theater. In this “half-length, full-person” format, the audience is invited to journey through the early American wilderness of ideas, thought, and sentiment, witnessing how Shakespeare's themes of power, love, betrayal, comedy, and tragedy were instrumental in shaping both our nation's fascinating identity and its most defining moments. Family-friendly for all ages!

Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: A Magazine covering our area you might not have heard of--The Neighborhood Buzz.

The Neighborhood Buzz covers the River Villages in Greenburgh but has some fascinating features that will interest many residents of unincorporated Greenburgh (links to some previous issues below).

A few weeks ago, when I was in Hastings stopping by at the new Quarry Park, someone handed me a copy of BEELocal, the Neighborhood Buzz. I was not previously aware of the publication which is sent to residents of the River Villages in Greenburgh.

The magazine doesn’t focus on politics but on human interest stories. Alan Greenwald is a resident of Greenburgh and publisher of the magazine. I saw him at the AF Veteran pool a few weeks ago and told him what a gift to the community his publication is.  He dropped off some back issues—each article is fascinating.   If you live in unincorporated Greenburgh and would like to subscribe you can by clicking onto the link below:

Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: Town Board Statement Regarding July 10, 2024 Resolution TB-1.

Re: Land Use Board and Committee Conflicts.

Town Board Statement Regarding July 10, 2024 Resolution TB-1

Re: Land Use Board and Committee Conflicts.

On July 10, 2024, the Town Board voted 4-1 to enact a new policy which prohibits key members of organizations whose primary function involves land use initiatives within the Town from being members of the Town’s land use boards and committees which render decisions.  We felt it was necessary to enact this new policy to prevent potential conflicts and the appearance of impropriety associated with the decision-making process regarding land use applications before the Town.  This policy was meant to apply regardless of whether there was opportunity for compensation for the land use boards or committee members.

Unfortunately, some public comments prior to and after the official passage of this resolution included incorrect information and personal attacks.  Contrary to some statements made at our Town Board meeting and in the media, this new policy does not restrict anyone’s First Amendment rights, nor does it change the Town’s Code of Ethics or impede affordable housing within the Town in any way.   After careful consideration, the Town Board decided that it is incompatible to have members on the Planning or Zoning Boards also become members of organizations which deal directly with developers within the Town.  In fact, this policy will allow volunteers the opportunity to have a more targeted focus on affordable housing. The majority of the Town Board therefore determined that all of the necessary information had been collected and analyzed, and that the approval of TB-1 of July 10, 2024 was timely and appropriate. The crafting of TB-1 occurred in the presence of all five Board Members including  Supervisor Feiner. He was present for the three discussions that took place regarding this matter. In addition, it should be made clear that opportunities to create consensus, offered by the Town Board and staff to the Planning Board and the Board of Ethics, were met with resistance, not collaboration.

The Town Board has great respect and admiration for our volunteers, which is why we continue to expand their ability to make impactful changes to our Town.  A few recent examples include the Greenburgh Against Systemic Racism Task Force, the Human Rights Advisory Committee, and the Accessible Viable Living Advisory Committee (which directly deals with affordable housing).  However, we also realize the importance of protecting the Town from potential conflicts which is not fair to other applicants and can result in liability.  The resolution adopted by the Town Board, which set forth our new policy, was an essential safeguard to help protect the Town from these conflicts.

We are confident that the policy adopted by the Town Board on July 10, 2024 was necessary and timely, and that the entire Town will benefit from its enactment.

Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: Completion of Hillside sidewalk to resume this coming week.

There was a short delay to allow Con Ed to complete its work. Sidewalk should be 100% completed in about a month.

Hillside sidewalk –work to resume this coming week.

There has been a 2-fold pause, holiday-based and to allow Con Edison to complete its work.

Fortunately Con Edison is at the 99% completion mark and this will facilitate a full relaunch by Morano (sidewalk contractor), which is scheduled for this Monday, July 15th. With Con Edison work complete, Morano will move very efficiently from July 15th for one month, at which point the project is anticipated to be finished. Finished means the full sidewalk, pedestrian signals, striping, all drainage work, and full repave for the east side of Hillside Avenue. The roadway leadups to Hillside will also be resurfaced to remove the dip.

Thank you for your patience during this project.

Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: NYS to spend 17 million to repave Central Ave-- Town Bd approves $3,200,000 for Greenburgh roads.

Central Ave is in bad shape and desperately needs to be milled and repaved.

Some good news for residents who driving over potholes.

I was contacted by the Governor’s office today and advised that her office has secured $17 million to mill and repave Central Ave. Anyone who drives on Central Ave will note that this Ave is in desperate need to be repaved. Lots of potholes. Motorists have complained to me about damages to their vehicles when they went over potholes in recent years.

I spoke to the engineer working on this project for the NYS Department of Transportation earlier this week and was advised that the Central Ave milling/repaving initiatives will take place in 2024 and in 2025. Con Ed still has not completed all the underground work on the Avenue.

GOVERNOR HOCHUL’S ANNOUNCEMENT CONFIRMING THAT CENTRAL AVE WILL BE PAVED

https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-announces-start-resurfacing-projects-westchester-county

Knollwood Road, parts of Dobbs Ferry Road, Grasslands Road are also state roads in Greenburgh in need of repaving. Knollwood is scheduled to be repaved next year. Initial work will be done this year and paving in the spring.

TOWN ROADS ALSO GET MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN FUNDING FOR THIS SEASON.

On Wednesday evening the Greenburgh Town Board awarded a $3,200,000 contract to Montesano Brothers to mill and repave streets owned by the town. That work will take place this season and could continue into the spring. We have been spending millions of dollars in recent years working hard to maintain our infrastructure.

Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: Confusing blinking light on Ardsley Rd/Ft Hill to be replaced with a traffic light.

Will make it safer for children and their parents to walk to the Greenville School and will reduce confusion among motorists

The Greenburgh Town Board unanimously approved the 2024 capital budget last night. Among the initiatives approved in the budget was a traffic light at Ardsley Road/Fort Hill Road. The smart traffic light will replace a confusing blinking light at this location. The cost of the light is estimated to be about $650,000 and will control traffic and safety movements and also improve pedestrian safety. The Greenville school is located on Ardsley Road. Many children and parents/caregivers walk to school and cross Ft Hill Road to get to Ardsley Road.. The Edgemont Community Council supports this light.

The blinking light at this location was confusing. Cars stopping at one of four locations don’t always know when to allow motorists at the other corners to proceed. I have personally witnessed some minor accidents at this location over the years.

The capital budget also includes funding for a sidewalk on Fort Hill Road from Longview to Underhill. This sidewalk will enable students to walk from the ABC streets in Edgemont to different schools and also has the support of the Edgemont Community Council.

Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh News: Tarrytown Volunteer firefighters save swimmers lives on July 4th.

These volunteers deserve to be honored by the Greenburgh Town Board for always preparing, training to keep us safe - and for their actions which have saved lives.

Our town is so lucky to have very dedicated volunteers who serve as members of different volunteer fire departments and ambulance corps.  The volunteers donate hundreds of hours training for life savings rescues and over the years have saved the lives of people in distress. On July 4th the Tarrytown Fire department rescued two swimmers in the Hudson River during the fireworks show.  I would like to honor these heroes at an upcoming Town Board meeting  and thank them for  their life savings initiatives. Watch the news12 story about how the volunteers saved two swimmers on the 4th.  Our firefighters deserve our thanks for being available day, night, weekends and holidays. They are always there for the community and work hard to keep us safe. THANK YOU!

Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: Ardsley Rd bridge, under repairs by NYS, to be completed in May 2025.

Northside of the bridge to be completed by early October 2024. South side by May 2025. It's already been four years!

WHEN WILL THE ARDSLEY ROAD BRIDGE BE COMPLETED?

IT’S ALREADY BEEN FOUR YEARS –WON’T BE COMPLETED UNTIL MAY 2025.

The Ardsley Road bridge, a NYS owned bridge,  has been under repairs for four years. For many months very little activity took place on the bridge that is near the Ardsley/unincorporated Greenburgh border). But –finally more steady work is taking place on this bridge. This is one of the longest construction projects on any bridge in the region.

Received an email from Andre Greaves -Burrows, who is the Engineer in Charge of the NYS Department of Transportation, Hudson Valley. Mr. Greaves-Burrows indicated that their current schedule shows the north side of the bridge being completed by early October 2024. The south side would be completed by May 2025.  The south side of the bridge will be worked on after the current side of the bridge is completed. But there is no gas main on that side of the bridge.

The most recent progress report:

•            Install of the remaining structural steel pieces are now complete.

•            The new gas main on and off bridge is now complete and has been placed into service by Con Edison.

•             Reconstruction of the bridge’s Backwalls is ongoing

•             Construction of the Form Work for the Structural Deck has also begun.

Greenburgh Insider: Town of Greenburgh: East Hartsdale Ave sewer pipe break update (in front of 100, 120, 80 E Hartsdale Ave).

Some positive news. But, sorry for the inconveniences many have experienced.

In recent weeks residents of E Hartsdale Ave have been impacted by a sewer pipe break. There has been some traffic delays, construction activity and inconveniences to residents. This is an update (July 2). Will continue to provide updates.

After weeks of jetting and cleaning the sewer pipes, the contractor has reached the damaged area and was able to video the pipe and provide a location and type of damage. It appears that the break has been isolated to the area of the manhole in front of 100 East Hartsdale Avenue and the downstream pipe just outside of the manhole. The condition of the downstream pipe appears to be largely undamaged. The downstream pipe appears to have been clogged primarily with the debris associated with the collapsing manhole in front of 100 East Hartsdale Avenue.

It should not require the Town to need to replace the downstream pipe and may allow us to “slipline” the pipe to provide it with some additional strength moving forward. The Town’s contractor is working on designing sheeting and will thereafter install  the sheeting to ensure that they can safely excavate down to replace the manhole and adjoining pipe sections. We have been updated that the contractor’s Engineer is still in the process of designing the sheeting and has completed its geotechnical investigation.
